A short story - "Just Roll with It"

I sat at the table for an extra half hour. He just wasn’t coming. I don’t know why I even got my hopes up that things would be different this time. He was always cancelling at the last minute or needing to reschedule. I just can’t believe he actually stood me up this time.

The bell on the door jingles, and I look up to see if it could be him. His dark hair and bright blue eyes tell me otherwise, but he makes his way towards me anyways.

“Hey I’m so sorry, my boss held me late and traffic was a nightmare.” The stranger made his way to my table. He gave me a peck on the cheek and whispered in my ear.

“I’m Ben. I need you to just roll with this because you’re in danger Amelia, and I’m here to keep you safe.” I don’t know if I was more shocked that this strange man knew my name or that he thought that I needed protecting from anything other than making bad relationship choices. But what the hell. Nothing exciting ever happened in my life anyways so I decided to do what he asked and roll with it.

“Well I’m glad you could end up making it. I was worried you were going to stand me up.” I gave him a playful dirty look and opened my menu.

“I’m so sorry again. I should have called. But hey, I’m here. We’re hungry. So let’s order and have a good time.” A heartwarming smile grew across his face, and it almost felt sincere. I waved over a waitress, and we each ordered our meals. We ate in relative silence once the food got there. I didn’t really know what to talk about with him since he was a complete stranger. With the silence my brain reeled at how weird this entire situation was. Attractive strangers never approached me let alone strangers who mysteriously already knew my name. I should be freaking out. I really should have just walked out, but after being on my own for the past year I really wanted some sort of company. Even if it was this weirdo for dinner. We were in public so nothing bad will happen… I hope.
